Drivers on SW Tualatin Valley Highway will face photo enforcement for speeding and red-light violations starting July 6 at the intersection with SW Millikan Way and SW 160th Avenue.

The Beaverton Police Department announced the new cameras on its Facebook page, making this the fifth photo-enforced intersection in the city and the first new location added since August 2019.

The post drew 38,000 views and more than 500 reactions, reflecting strong community interest in the high-traffic corridor.

Signs at the intersection will alert drivers that cameras are active, according to the department's website. The cameras capture images only when a vehicle crosses the first line of a crosswalk or enters the intersection after the signal turns red.

For speeding, Oregon law allows cities to cite drivers going 11 mph or more above the posted speed limit during green and yellow phases, and 21 mph or more above the limit during a red phase.

Every citation is reviewed and digitally signed by a Beaverton Police Department photo enforcement officer before it is mailed.

The department has not confirmed whether a warning period will precede live citations at the new location. When the city rolled out speed enforcement at its other intersections in 2018, it issued 3,593 warnings over 30 days before citations began.

Where cameras are already active

Four other Beaverton intersections have photo enforcement cameras:

  • SW Beaverton Hillsdale Highway at SW Griffith Drive
  • SW Walker Road at SW Cedar Hills Boulevard
  • SW Scholls Ferry Road at SW Hall Boulevard
  • SW Allen Boulevard at SW Lombard Avenue

The program launched in January 2001 as a red-light-only system. Speed enforcement was added starting in October 2018 after the Oregon Legislature authorized it in 2017.

Fine amounts are not listed on the department's website. Residents with questions can contact the Photo Enforcement Program at 503-526-2546.

The Beaverton Police Department's official photo enforcement webpage had not yet been updated to include the TV Highway location as of Saturday, July 5.
