Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue crews pulled a dog from a burning home in Sherwood on July 5, resuscitated it with a pet oxygen mask, and rescued a tortoise found hiding under a trailer.
Multiple callers reported heavy smoke and flames pouring from a house in the 15300 block of SW Clifford Court at 8:13 a.m., TVF&R said. The home was fully engulfed when firefighters arrived.
Crews knocked down the fire and kept it from spreading to neighboring houses. They had it under control about 40 minutes after arrival and stayed on scene to extinguish hot spots.
The dog was not breathing when firefighters carried it outside. TVF&R said crews used a pet oxygen mask to deliver oxygen, and the dog began breathing again before being transported to an emergency veterinary hospital.
A tortoise was also found under a trailer on the property and taken to a vet.
The agency has not released updates on either animal's condition.
Three residents were displaced by the fire. The American Red Cross Cascades Region is assisting them. Residents needing disaster assistance can reach the Red Cross at 1-800-733-2767.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
TVF&R is the fire and emergency medical services agency for Beaverton, Sherwood, Tigard, Tualatin, and several other cities across a 390-square-mile district. More than 450 career firefighters and paramedics staff 28 stations serving roughly 552,000 residents.
The same crews and equipment that responded to the Sherwood fire cover Beaverton neighborhoods.
TVF&R reminded residents that a burn ban is in effect across its entire service area, though the agency has not linked the ban to this particular fire.
