Three Beaverton School District football teams take the field Friday, Oct. 16, with Aloha chasing its first playoff berth in seven years and Westview riding a four-game win streak.

Westview travels to Sunset for a 6A Metro League game between district rivals. Aloha hosts Canby in a 5A Greater Metro Conference clash between two 5-1 teams. OregonLive's 12-member prediction panel weighed in on both games Thursday.

Westview at Sunset: panel picks Wildcats 11-1

The panel's verdict is lopsided. Eleven of 12 writers picked Westview, with only Taylor Balkom taking Sunset.

Westview (4-2, 2-0 Metro) has won four straight, its longest streak since winning the 2022 Columbia Cup title, according to OregonLive's Week 6 recap. Senior wide receiver Tahkai Smith amassed more than 300 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns in the Wildcats' 38-7 homecoming win over Beaverton on Oct. 9.

Senior Hank Whitworth, who tore his ACL early in his sophomore season, earned second-team all-Metro League honors as a kicker last year after going 20 for 20 on extra points and 2 for 2 on field goals in six games, according to OregonLive's preseason player rankings.

Sunset (3-3) enters on a two-game win streak of its own. The Apollos beat Southridge 28-12 on Oct. 9 after topping Beaverton 42-35 on Oct. 2, according to the Beaverton Valley Times and Hillsboro News Times scoreboards.

Canby at Aloha: a split decision

This one is tight. Seven panelists picked Canby, and five picked Aloha.

Both teams enter at 5-1. Aloha rolled past Liberty 51-32 on Oct. 9, while Canby handled Hillsboro 42-7 the same night, according to the Beaverton Valley Times scoreboard.

The Warriors have been one of the state's best stories this fall. It was only three years ago that Aloha snapped a 27-game losing streak, and the program has not reached the playoffs in seven years, OregonLive reported in its Week 5 recap. Senior running back Alexis Hernandez Diaz Leal has emerged as a force. He ran for 230 yards and three touchdowns in Aloha's 39-36 comeback win over Forest Grove on Oct. 2, according to OregonLive.

Aloha coach James Mitcham called it "absolutely amazing" to watch Hernandez Diaz Leal run behind the offensive line after the Oct. 2 win. "That's why they're the franchise," Mitcham told OregonLive. "Everybody was working super hard for one another, and Alexis was able to benefit from it."

Senior lineman Scottland Telesa, the reigning 6A shot put state champion, anchors both sides of the line at 6 feet, 255 pounds. He made the 5A all-state second team on offense and third team on defense as a junior, according to OregonLive's preseason rankings.

Canby brings a physical ground game. Running backs Aiden Salazar and Owen Hodson combined for 179 rushing yards in the Cougars' Week 5 win over Liberty, and quarterback Brody Joyce went 13 of 23 for 167 yards and two touchdowns, OregonLive reported.

Canby coach Jimmy Joyce said after the Week 5 win that his defense has improved after allowing 32.7 points per game last season. The Cougars allowed just 17 points over their last two games heading into Week 6.

Beaverton (0-6) hosts Jesuit (4-2) in the other local 6A Metro game Friday night.
