Construction crews are reinforcing Cedar Park and Meadow Park Middle Schools against earthquakes this summer, part of a multi-year push to retrofit every Beaverton School District middle school, the district announced.

The work, funded by the voter-approved 2022 Bond, must wrap up before students return Tuesday, Aug. 25, for the 2026-27 school year.

At Cedar Park, the first phase of seismic upgrades began in spring 2026. Half the school's roof is also being replaced this summer, with both projects scheduled to continue in summer 2027. At Meadow Park, crews are in the second phase of upgrades that started last summer; phase one, completed in summer 2025, included a roof replacement.

This summer's scope at Meadow Park also includes a full roof replacement and a theater overhaul with new stage lights, controllers and a modern sound system, according to the district's bond project page.

During construction at Cedar Park, crews uncovered a decades-old artifact, and two former students who made it were brought back to see it, the district posted on Instagram this summer.

Broader seismic picture

Mountain View Middle School's retrofit, also bond-funded, was wrapping up as of fall 2025, making it the furthest along of the middle school projects. The district's seismic work is far from done.

A 2007 state report rated 13 of Beaverton's 46 schools as "high" risk of collapse in an earthquake and one as "very high." As of September 2025, 11 of those high-risk schools remained in use, OregonLive reported.

"We won't be done with the work in this bond and it's going to take more bonds to finish," Aaron Boyle, BSD's administrator for facilities development, told OregonLive in September 2025.

Bond budget may fall short

The overall 2022 Bond totals $797 million with a $51 million contingency. As of September 2025, roughly $370 million had been spent, with completed or in-process projects accounting for 72% of the bond's scope.

The Bond Accountability Committee raised concerns at its Sept. 9, 2025, meeting that the seismic budget may not stretch far enough. The original estimate was based on a single school and assumed BSD would receive state seismic rehabilitation grants. The district has applied for several rounds but has not received any.

Oregon's Seismic Rehabilitation Grant Program has awarded nearly $650 million to 350 of the state's roughly 1,300 schools since voters created it in 2002, but individual awards cap at $2.5 million, a fraction of full retrofit costs.

The next phase of work at both Cedar Park and Meadow Park is scheduled for summer 2027.
