Experience and public service
Garrett's career spans private law practice, legislative service and the judiciary.
He started in private practice as an attorney at Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP from 2000 to 2001. He then served as a law clerk at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit from 2001 to 2002. He worked as an attorney at Perkins Coie LLP from 2002 to 2003.
Garrett entered elected office as a state representative in the Oregon Legislature, serving from 2009 to 2013. He then moved to the bench as a judge on the Oregon Court of Appeals, where he served from 2014 to 2019.
He has served as a justice on the Oregon Supreme Court since 2019.
