The Beaverton Education Foundation (BEF) is collecting donations to buy grocery gift cards for Beaverton School District families who depend on school meals that won't be served over winter break.

The campaign, called "Feed My Body, Feed My Brain," went live Tuesday, Nov. 3. The foundation says one-third of BSD students rely on school for two meals a day.

During the school year, all BSD students can get a free breakfast and a free lunch with no application or income requirements, according to the district.

When winter break arrives, those meals stop.

The foundation says 22 school meals need replacing over the break. BEF pegs the average cost of replacing one week of meals for a 12-year-old at $67. Donations fund grocery gift cards.

One unattributed testimonial on the campaign page describes a family at William Walker Elementary School that received a gift card after a mother lost her job.

A second, also unattributed, credits past donors with helping the foundation's BASE community support every family that expressed a need during a previous holiday season.

The campaign page does not list a fundraising goal or a deadline.
