Beaverton's National Night Out is back on the calendar after heat and wildfire smoke forced cancellation of the Aug. 4 event.

The Beaverton Police Department announced the free community event will now take place Tuesday, Sept. 22, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Evelyn Schiffler Memorial Park.

The announcement appeared in the city's official newsletter on Monday, Aug. 31.

The lineup includes K-9 team demonstrations, games, ice cream, live entertainment and other activities.

Why it was postponed

The department had originally planned National Night Out for Tuesday, Aug. 4, at the same park with the same 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. time slot.

On Aug. 3, the city posted a cancellation notice citing high heat and poor air quality from wildfire smoke.

The department said the conditions posed potential health risks and that canceling was in the best interest of everyone involved.

The annual event brings law enforcement and residents together for an evening in a neighborhood setting, and the department said it looks forward to hosting it each year.

Beaverton was not alone in pulling the plug. Tigard and Sherwood police also scrapped their Aug. 4 National Night Out plans for the same reasons, the Beaverton Valley Times reported.

A National Weather Service heat advisory was in effect through 11 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 5, with temperatures forecast to reach 94 degrees.

Event details

The rescheduled event keeps the same format and location as the original. Admission is free.

National Night Out is observed annually across the country. Beaverton's version gives residents a chance to meet officers, watch the department's K-9 team in action and enjoy an evening outdoors at Evelyn Schiffler Memorial Park.

The department has not announced whether Tigard or Sherwood plan to reschedule their own events.
