A 12-part video series profiling Beaverton School District's school safety officers debuts Sunday, Sept. 6, on FOX 12.

The district announced "Partners in Protection & Prevention," a collaboration with KPTV FOX 12, the Beaverton Police Department and the Washington County Sheriff's Office. The series profiles the district's Youth Services Officers, or YSOs, who work inside schools but remain unfamiliar to many families.

The first episode airs on FOX 12's Good Day Oregon morning program and features interviews with Beaverton Chief of Police Stacy Jepson, Washington County Sheriff Caprice Massey and BSD Associate Superintendent Casey Waletich. New episodes will air Sunday mornings through November.

"Building a relationship is the key element to our YSOs," Waletich said in the district's announcement. "I think our YSO program provides an essential component to our overall safety and security."

Waletich added that school safety is a shared responsibility among the district, staff, students and the broader community.

Nine YSOs serve BSD schools. Five come from the Beaverton Police Department and four from the Washington County Sheriff's Office. Their duties include taking reports on child abuse, harassment and weapons possession, providing classroom instruction, patrolling campuses, monitoring school and police radios, and attending safety meetings.

According to the district's YSO page, the officers use trauma-informed, prevention-focused practices.

Student discipline is not part of their job.

The series aims to show the relationships officers build with students. One recent example: YSO Rachael Skjelstad of the Beaverton Police Department ran a coloring contest at William Walker Elementary School that gave students a voice in a design project while connecting them with their officer. The district highlighted the contest in a Sept. 4 post.

Families can watch the series on Good Day Oregon Sunday mornings, via FOX 12's livestream at kptv.com/livestream, or through the FOX 12 app.
