Beaverton Sports Club opens its five-court tennis facility Friday, Oct. 23, with a 9:30 a.m. ribbon-cutting at 5803 S.W. Beaverton-Hillsdale Highway.

Mayor Lacey Beaty and Beaverton Area Chamber of Commerce representatives will lead the ceremony, followed by a tour of the courts, the Beaverton Valley Times reported.

The club offers tennis classes for all ages and a yearly membership that grants access to book court time.

Lisa Moholt, the club's director of athlete services and member experience, told the Beaverton Valley Times the team wants to build a gathering place for all ages around sports and new interests. She said she is especially eager to welcome young players.

"We're especially looking forward to giving local kids the opportunity to get on the court, have fun, and experience the excitement of tennis," Moholt said.

A free community event for kids ages 5 through 17 follows on Saturday, Oct. 24, from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m. at the same location. The afternoon includes on-court tennis activities and games.

One draw: kids can return balls hit by Pete Yellico, whom the Beaverton Valley Times described as a former University of Oregon tennis coach.

The University of Oregon athletics website lists Yellico as the Ducks' current assistant women's tennis coach, a role he has held since December 2023.

Before joining Oregon, Yellico served as head men's tennis coach at Pacific University in Forest Grove, compiling a 95-41 record over five seasons and earning 2021 Northwest Conference Coach of the Year honors.

Girl Scouts and Canvas & Code, a Beaverton-based STEAM art studio, will host informational tables at the Saturday event with opportunities for local families.

Both the Friday ribbon-cutting and Saturday kids event are open to the public.

Membership pricing and registration details for the Saturday event have not been announced.
