Beaverton School District has held two national budget transparency awards every year for more than a decade. The streaks just got longer.

The district announced Wednesday, Aug. 26 that it received the Association of School Business Officials International Meritorious Budget Award for the 15th consecutive year and the Government Finance Officers Association Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 12th straight year. Both recognize the district's 2026-27 adopted budget document.

The awards evaluate how clearly a district presents its financial decisions to board members, families and taxpayers. To earn the ASBO honor, districts submit their budgets for peer review by school finance professionals who score them against a detailed criteria checklist.

Chief Financial Officer Jessica Jones credited the district's Business Services budget team, saying they put in "countless hours of budget development, analysis and collaboration" to ensure "complex financial information is clear, transparent and accessible in support of our students, staff and community."

The recognition comes as BSD navigates significant fiscal pressure. According to the district's annual budget page, a structural deficit is projected to grow from $20 million this year to more than $70 million by 2029, driven by declining enrollment, a $5.08 million local option levy shortfall and rising operational costs. The district expects to lose roughly 600 students per year starting in 2026.

The school board adopted the 2026-27 budget on June 9 after the budget committee approved it on May 19.

BSD serves 36,267 students across 53 schools, making it Oregon's second-largest district. The ASBO award streak dates to the 2012-13 budget year; the GFOA streak began with the 2015-16 budget.
