Beaverton-area shoppers will get a larger-format sporting goods store where Sears once stood at Washington Square mall.
Dick's House of Sport is under construction on the northeast side of the Tigard shopping complex, on the footprint of the former Sears building that was razed after the retailer closed in 2019.
The store is scheduled to open in fall 2027, according to the Beaverton Valley Times.
The new concept store will replace the existing 90,000-square-foot Dick's Sporting Goods, which has operated at Washington Square since 2008.
Dick's House of Sport locations are two to three times larger than standard Dick's stores and include a climbing wall, multiple golf bays with TrackMan simulators, and HitTrax multi-sport cages for baseball, softball and soccer, according to a statement from mall officials in February.
Maria Halstead, Washington Square's general manager, said in a February statement that the new store builds on the existing Dick's location's performance. The current store will relocate within the complex when the House of Sport opens.
Sears was one of Washington Square's original tenants, opening in 1973. The store shut its doors in 2019 after Sears Holdings filed for bankruptcy. For years, the mall's owner, the Macerich Company, discussed possible uses for the site with the city of Tigard, including a theater, a hotel and smaller restaurants.
Food court renovation
Washington Square's upper-level food court is also getting a renovation the mall calls a "refresh," with new flooring, enhanced lighting, updated paint finishes and modern furniture, along with improved access paths to the dining area. "We're excited to share a new look at the progress taking shape at Washington Square," Halstead said in a May 21 statement when the mall released renderings of the project.
The Dick's House of Sport is scheduled to open in fall 2027. No additional construction milestones have been announced.
