Beaverton-area families have a new professional theater option nearby this summer: Broadway Rose Theatre Company opens Disney's "Newsies" today at Deb Fennell Auditorium.
The Tony Award-winning musical runs on select dates through Sunday, Aug. 16. Youth tickets for ages 6 through 18 cost $20.
Director Lyn Cramer, who previously directed "Beautiful: The Carole King Musical," "Cats," and "Mamma Mia" for Broadway Rose, traveled to New York City to recruit dancers for the production. She combined that talent with local Oregon performers.
"When I was asked to direct 'Newsies' I said, 'let's go!' and the search was on for incredible dancers," Cramer said in a statement released for opening night. "We were off to New York City where we found a treasure trove of gifted performers."
The cast features Grant Goldman as Jack Kelly, Sophie MacKay as Katherine Plumber, Josie Seid as Medda Larkin, Xander Dean as Davey, Alec J. Connolly as Joseph Pulitzer, Sam Myerson as Crutchie, and Dorian Woolfe Baxter as Les. Choreographer Amy Reynolds-Reed and music director Billy Thompson round out the production team.
Based on the real-life New York City newsboys' strike of 1899 and the 1992 Disney film, the story follows Jack Kelly and a band of teenage newspaper sellers who fight back after a publishing company raises their distribution prices.
