Beaverton's Elsie Stuhr Center will hold a free Health and Wellness Resource Fair on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at 5550 S.W. Hall Blvd.

The center is the only facility in the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District (THPRD) dedicated to adults 55 and older, according to THPRD's website. It offers fitness classes, drop-in activities, support groups, trips and special events year-round.

The center bears the name of Elsie Stuhr, who in 1953 organized a citizens council that led to the district's formation two years later, according to THPRD's history page.

On a typical day, visitors may find Zumba, yoga, ceramics, a book club, Texas Hold 'em, ukulele lessons, peer support groups, billiards and bingo under way.

Wednesday bingo alone draws about 40 players, according to the Beaverton Resource Guide.

Honor Arnold, a Beaverton senior-living consultant who volunteers weekly as a barista at the center's coffee bar, wrote in the Guide that many regulars have attended for 10 years or longer. She described the center as a place where older adults come to stay connected, overcome boredom and combat loneliness. Arnold wrote that for some regulars, the center "has been their cure for loneliness and an antidote for depression."

Arnold is also participating as a vendor at the Sept. 26 fair. She will present "Rethinking Senior Living: Separating Yesterday's Perceptions from Today's Reality" at 11:45 a.m. in the Willow room.

Admission is free.

The center also houses a Meals on Wheels People dining program on Mondays, Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m.
