The murder trial for the man accused of killing Beaverton nurse Melissa Jubane has been postponed a third time, pushing the case to September 2027.
Meanwhile, a former Beaverton Police Department detective who worked the investigation faces his own criminal trial on six misconduct charges.
The Sept. 8 date falls almost exactly two years after the trial was originally set to begin on Sept. 9, 2025.
Bryce Schubert, 29, faces charges of first-degree murder, first-degree kidnapping and second-degree abuse of a corpse. His murder charge was upgraded from second-degree to first-degree during the proceedings.
Detective's misconduct charges cloud the case
Former BPD Detective Michael Boliek, who wrote search warrants and testified before a grand jury in the Schubert case, resigned from the department in November 2025 after being indicted by a Washington County grand jury in October 2025.
Boliek faces six misdemeanor counts of first-degree official misconduct. Court records show he allegedly solicited sexually explicit images under the false pretense they were for official police purposes, drove a department-issued vehicle on personal errands and used his badge for personal benefit, according to KGW and court records. He has pleaded not guilty to all counts.
The Washington County District Attorney's Office confirmed in January that its Conviction Integrity Committee is reviewing Boliek's future availability as a witness in the Schubert case.
A two-year pattern of delays
The trial has been postponed three times. The first delay moved it from September 2025 to March 31, 2026, after a defense attorney said he needed more preparation time. The second, granted at a March 13, 2026, hearing, pushed it to April 2027 after defense attorneys cited an overwhelming caseload.
"The caseload that we're contracted to provide by the Oregon Public Defense Commission makes that trial setting impossible," defense attorney Gregory B. Scholl said at that March 2026 hearing, as reported by The Oregonian.
Senior prosecutor Andrew Freeman said at the same hearing that the state was ready for trial as soon as October 2026, but Judge Guptill noted the courthouse can accommodate only one murder trial at a time.
Background
Jubane, 32, was reported missing in September 2024 after she failed to show up for her nursing shift at Providence St. Vincent Medical Center. Her body was found two days later. Schubert, her neighbor at the Baseline 158 Apartments in Beaverton, was arrested.
A gag order bars public disclosure of information in the case, and requests by reporters to unseal search warrants and the probable cause affidavit have been denied.
