Lakeridge beat No. 8 Mountainside 34-22 on Friday, Sept. 18, in Lake Oswego, dropping the Mavericks to 2-2 on the season.
The loss puts Mountainside's poll standing in jeopardy. The Mavericks had been ranked No. 8 in the 6A coaches poll published Sept. 16 with a 2-1 record and 35 poll points.
They had risen from unranked in the preseason to No. 7 in the Week 1 poll before settling at No. 8 after Week 2.
Both of Mountainside's losses this season have come against Three Rivers League teams, according to OSAAtoday.
A back-and-forth game
The contest swung both ways. OSAAtoday reported that Mountainside erased a 13-point Lakeridge lead in the second half before the Pacers rallied down the stretch to pull away.
The decisive play came with seven minutes left, when Lakeridge receiver Jagger Salazar got behind the Mountainside defense and caught a 71-yard touchdown pass for the go-ahead score, KATU reported.
Junior quarterback Carson Pickens powered the Lakeridge offense, finishing with 284 yards and three touchdown passes. Mason Girt led the Pacers with 187 total yards, running for one score and catching another of Pickens' passes. Hudson Armerding hauled in the third touchdown reception. Colby Owen added a rushing touchdown.
"I'm really proud of how hard our team is playing. We are so young, and they are doing a tremendous job," Lakeridge head coach Spencer Phillips told OregonLive after the win.
Lakeridge improved to 3-1 and heads into an open week before Three Rivers League play begins.
What it means for Mountainside
Fourth-year head coach Keanon Lowe's squad entered 2026 with high expectations after winning the Metro League title in 2024 and finishing 6-4 in 2025. The Mavericks are breaking in first-year starting quarterback Mason Severson, who replaced all-state quarterback Cade Mitchell, now at New Mexico.
Lowe said in the OregonLive Metro League preview before the season that his team was "more prepared for a run than years past."
Senior linebacker Toren Drucker, a preseason candidate for 6A defensive player of the year after earning all-state honorable mention with 23 tackles and 6.5 sacks in 2025, anchors the defense. But the Mavericks will need to regroup with Metro League play ahead.
The 6A coaches poll is advisory only and does not affect the OSAA's RPI and Colley ratings used for playoff seeding. The next poll, which will reflect the Sept. 18 result, has not yet been published.
