Portland-based Northwest Naturals is pulling nearly 2,000 pounds of raw chicken pet food from store shelves after federal testing found Salmonella and Listeria contamination.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced the voluntary recall on Friday, Aug. 28, covering two frozen chicken products sold at independent pet retailers nationwide. Beaverton-area stores may carry the brand. Pet owners who bought either product should stop feeding it to their animals and return it for a full refund.
The recall covers:
- Northwest Naturals Frozen Chicken Recipe (cat food and dog protein topper), 2-lb. bags, Lot B-5, best by Jan. 26, 2028, UPC 087316384956. This product tested positive for Salmonella.
- Northwest Naturals Frozen Raw Diet for Dogs Chicken Recipe, 6-lb. bags, Lot B-19, best by Jan. 25, 2028, UPC 087316380392. This product tested positive for both Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella.
In total, the recall affects 53 cases of the cat food (1,272 pounds) and 19 cases of the dog food (684 pounds).
The FDA identified the contamination after collecting and testing product samples. No illnesses have been reported. The recall is voluntary, according to the agency's notice.
Both bacteria pose risks to people who handle contaminated raw pet food, especially without thorough handwashing. Salmonella symptoms in people include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and fever.
Listeria can cause headaches, confusion, loss of balance and convulsions. Pregnant women, newborns, adults 65 and older and people with weakened immune systems face the highest risk from Listeria.
Pets that eat contaminated food may show lethargy, diarrhea, fever and vomiting. Even healthy-looking animals can carry the bacteria and spread it to other pets or people in the household.
Northwest Naturals was founded by the Morasch family, whose meat business dates to 1956 under founder Mel Morasch. The company has manufactured raw frozen pet food at its Portland facility since 2004 and sells exclusively through independent retailers, not big-box chains. As KGW reported, the recalled products were distributed to stores nationwide.
