Powell's Books at Cedar Hills Crossing will accept used books five days a week starting Friday, Sept. 4, up from the three-day schedule in place since 2021.

The shift is significant for sellers. Under the old schedule, the store at 3415 SW Cedar Hills Blvd. bought books only on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, closing the buying counter at 5 p.m. The new hours run Friday through Tuesday, 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., adding Monday and Tuesday and extending the window by 30 minutes each day.

The change also applies to Powell's Burnside and Hawthorne locations, the Portland Tribune reported Sept. 3. Powell's, founded in 1971, paused used-book buying entirely in 2020 and brought it back in 2021 on a limited, three-day-a-week basis across its stores.

The bookstore said the expanded schedule should shorten wait times, give customers more weekday options and increase the supply of used titles on shelves. High-quality used books are among the most sought-after items in its stores, and the company said it can purchase as many as 5,000 used books across all locations on a given day.

Jennifer Wicka, Powell's director of retail operations, told the Tribune that science fiction and classics are genres the stores struggle to restock fast enough.

"The more books that come across our buying table, the more opportunities we have to help customers discover new authors and titles," Wicka said.

Owner Emily Powell said in a statement that used books have been central to the company for more than five decades and called the expansion long-awaited.

The 32,500-square-foot Cedar Hills Crossing store carries used, new and hard-to-find books across every category. Sellers receive in-store credit after their books are evaluated on site.

The new buying hours take effect Sept. 4. Powell's Cedar Hills Crossing page had not yet been updated with the new schedule as of Sept. 3.
