Human remains believed to be those of two Beaverton men missing since September 2025 were found inside their vehicle after loggers discovered it off Highway 6 in Tillamook County on Friday, Aug. 14.

Eddie Hair, 67, and Scott Smith, 68, disappeared nearly a year ago while preparing for an outdoor trip that may have involved searching for rare rocks on the Oregon Coast or in Central Oregon, according to KOIN. Beaverton police confirmed the vehicle is connected to their September 2025 missing persons cases.

The Tillamook County Sheriff's Office said the car was found in the Jones Creek area, where it appears to have left the road and careened down a steep hillside. The vehicle sustained significant damage consistent with a motor vehicle crash, with debris scattered throughout the surrounding area before it came to rest against trees.

Investigators believe the remains may be those of Hair and Smith but said official identification has not been completed. The sheriff's office said it is awaiting the appropriate examination and identification process before releasing further information.

Authorities have not indicated foul play is suspected.

The two friends were last known to be together in September 2025. The Beaverton Police Department publicly asked for the community's help locating Hair and Smith on Oct. 29, 2025, more than a month after they went missing, describing their absence as concerning, according to KPTV.

The case drew attention beyond Oregon, with People magazine reporting on the disappearance and noting the men's full names as Eddie Curtis Hair and Scott Jon Smith.

Their vehicle sat undiscovered for roughly 11 months in the rugged, forested terrain along Highway 6, the main route connecting the Portland metro area to the Tillamook coast. Loggers working in the Jones Creek area located it on Aug. 14.

The Tillamook County Sheriff's Office said no additional information will be released until official identification is complete. The investigation remains open.
