The Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District and the Beaverton School District are collecting athletic shoes for local students in need, and the deadline to donate is Monday, Aug. 31.
THPRD is accepting new and gently used athletic and tennis shoes at two drop-off locations through the end of the drive:
- Babette Horenstein Tennis Center, 15707 NW Walker Road
- Sunset Swim Center, 13707 NW Science Park Drive
No appointment is needed at either site.
The park district posted on its news page Tuesday, Aug. 25, that the drive had entered its final week. THPRD urged families to check their closets and share the drive with friends and neighbors to help support local students before the deadline closes.
The partnership between the two agencies isn't new. THPRD and BSD share an intergovernmental agreement covering facility use and maintenance, according to THPRD board minutes from earlier this year, and the shoe drive puts that relationship to work for families who need it most.
Shoes should be in wearable condition. The drive accepts both new pairs and gently used athletic or tennis shoes suitable for students heading back to school.
For families who miss the Aug. 31 deadline, BSD operates Clothes for Kids, a year-round program at the District Support Center, 16550 SW Merlo Road, that provides free clothing and shoes to students by appointment. Families may visit once per semester; hours run Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. during the school year.
Whether shoes collected in this drive go directly to Clothes for Kids or a separate BSD effort has not been confirmed.
Donations are accepted at both drop-off sites through Monday, Aug. 31, with no appointment needed.
