Families near Bonny Slope Park will get a new nature-inspired playground by spring 2027, and the Tualatin Hills Park & Recreation District wants neighbors to help pick the design.

THPRD announced Tuesday, July 28, that it will tear out the aging play equipment at the Cedar Mill-area park, located at 11100 NW Thompson Road, and replace it with nature-inspired structures.

The project will also add an accessible path from the parking lot to the playground and improve stormwater management on site.

The existing equipment "is near the end of its lifespan," the district said in its newsflash. The rest of the park stays open. Sport fields, courts, restrooms, and the walking trail are not part of the project.

How to weigh in

THPRD is hosting a free community design night on Tuesday, Aug. 4, from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the park. The district is billing it as a family event with free treats, all-ages activities, and a chance to vote on playground design options.

Funding and timeline

The replacement is paid for by Metro's 2019 Parks and Nature bond, a $475 million voter-approved measure funding park improvements across the Portland region. THPRD's board approved a $12,086,444 Metro Bond Local Share Capital Fund appropriation on Wednesday, June 10, covering multiple bond-funded projects districtwide, according to board meeting records.

Community engagement runs August through October. Design and construction planning begins in November, with construction expected to start by winter 2026 and the finished playground opening in spring 2027.

The project was first listed among THPRD's upcoming capital work in March 2026, when the Parks & Facilities Advisory Committee noted playground replacements at both Bonny Slope and Rock Creek parks.
